In The Mix with Jerry Johnson TB!: How long have you been entertaining people with what you do? Jerry: Since 1993. TB!: What got you started in / led you to a career in comedy? Jerry: I’ve always enjoyed watching comedies so I began writing, that led to doing a few 'open mics', enjoyed that and did well so the ball kept rolling. TB!: Who were some of your biggest influences as you got started? Jerry: Flip Wilson, but when I found myself being 'overly influenced' by him, I realized that I 'needed to be me' onstage. TB!: You know what they say to entertainers – ‘better keep your day job!’ What’s your day job? Would you ever not have a day job, I mean would entertaining ever be your only gig? Jerry: I work for a company that manages mail / copy rooms when companies prefer to 'outsource'. In a 'perfect world', I would be entertaining full time! TB!: What career path would you follow if you weren’t being an entertainer? Jerry: I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing except maybe teaching or mentoring in some capacity. TB!: Who are some of the bigger names in your business that you follow and who inspire you to do better? Jerry: I watch a lot of comedians, have some favorites, but too many to name. My family, my friends, and my audience inspire me to do better. I've had some very flattering and humbling things said to me after shows… that's motivating as hell! TB!: What music is in your personal CD player/mp3 player right now? Jerry: My nephew made me a cd... music I requested, 2pac, Jay Z, R. Kelly, 50 Cent, a nice mix of R&B and Hip-Hop. TB!: How would you describe the genre/style of comedy that you do – what should people expect to hear when they come to your gig? Jerry: My comedy is what I call 'relatable', my partners call it 'mainstream', it's not 'Urban', it has no color, I can perform in most rooms, I do corporate shows, 'club' shows. You can expect a nice, easy, style, I do 'bits', 'stories, with impressions, you may get Ali, Mike Tyson, Bernie Mac, and typically I'll close with my 'ebonics' book… expect the unexpected! |
