In The Mix with Jerry Johnson TB!: Describe your audience, the people who follow you from gig-to-gig. What do you think makes them want to come to your gigs time-and-time again? Jerry: I've been fortunate to have a 'respectable following', recently did a show, and afterwards, someone who has seen me perform 2-3 times prior, said, 'I haven't seen some of that before, I like the new stuff.' Did four shows that particular weekend, and none was identical. I try to keep it fresh, even if you've seen me before, you will see something new. My audience is so varied, as far as age, race, and gender... that's how I write, and with very little profanity. TB!: Describe your type of humor to someone who has never head your perform. Jerry: I talk about everyday things, news stories, mix in a few impressions, I rarely talk about marriage, or relationships, or 'graphic sex'. TB!: Describe your first gig, the very first time you were in front of a crowd, trying to get them to laugh. Jerry: The very first 'paying gig', was as an emcee/ 'opener', twenty-five bucks!! I still have a framed copy of the check! TB!: Who are some of your favorite colleagues – people who you like to listen to when you aren’t entertaining? Jerry: I like variety... there is a lot of talent right here in Arizona - T. A. Burrows, a total entertainer, Kyle is fun to watch, more 'urban', nationally, I like D.L. Hughley, Carlos Mencia. TB!: What do you do for fun/ entertainment/ down time? Jerry: 'Down time' - what's that? But seriously folks - I like to drive up north, Arizona has a lot of sights, but I also enjoy some concerts, movies. TB!: Who is the most famous person you’ve met? How did that meeting take place? Jerry: D.L. Hughley took me to dinner, I enjoyed kickin’ it with Chris Tucker for a minute. TB!: What’s your take on where music and comedy has changed over the years? Where do you think it will go over the next five years? Jerry: I am ‘old school' so today's music is too graphic for my tastes. In comedy the 'New Jacks' believe it's hip to curse! Recently I attended an 'urban comedy' seminar in Atlanta, and one of the panelists said, 'Eddie Murphy used to 'curse to curse', Richard Pryor cursed, but 'you hardly noticed.' That made a lot of sense to me. TB!: Describe your worst gig – the time when you were NOT very entertaining and the crowd let you know it! Jerry: My worst gig, NBA All-star weekend in Phoenix a few years ago. I was on stage outdoors in the middle of Patriots Square Park in Phoenix. Three, four things going on at once, BIG distractions! I've never worked in a setting like that since. TB!: How do you know when you are "on a roll" – what signs do you look for that you are controlling the crowd and they are in the palm of your hand? Jerry: Laughter, feedback / comments are the best 'gauge' for me. But when people applaud just after a joke or a bit, that's gravy! TB!: If you could perform anywhere you choose, where would be the top - the place where you have always dreamed you would perform before you check out of this world? Jerry: I am in a good place right now, I'm truly blessed! I once dreamed of walking on stage on Comic View, done that! I've performed with D.L. Hughley, Patti LaBelle, James Brown and filled rooms on my own, so I can't kick, to perform on a nationally televised show like Leno or Letterman would be awesome. The best is yet to come!
